Slowly but surely

I remember Ben's nursery came together fast. I guess that's easy to do when you don't have a toddler under foot. So baby girl's nursery is taking some time, but it'll be done when she gets here! That I know.

This weekend we got the nursery painted, so she's now a lovely shade of tan instead of gray. Observe:

Now here's my question. The dark gray doors looked fine when the room was light gray. But now that it's tan, do I need to paint these doors white? That sounds about as desirable as scrubbing toilets, but if I really need to, I will (and I'm guessing it's going to take eight thousand coats of white to cover). Thoughts?

Now I just need to take this lovely fabric and whip it up into some curtains.

Like how I made that sound so easy? Like I can just whip up some curtains in five minutes or something. Please. I can barely sew two pieces of fabric together to make a square. I think it's the whole measuring thing that scares me more than anything. Oh well. Details, right?

  1. The only way I can see leaving those doors that color is if you add in more of that color elsewhere... like maybe a carpet striped with it or a touch of it somewhere else.

  2. Hmm. I think the doors add character.. but maybe a touch of that color somewhere else would be good.
As for sewing square. I don't think anybody can! LOL, I certainly cant... but cutting square helps if you have the cutting mats and junk.. :) Super cute fabric!

  3. I wouldn't paint the door to the bedroom unless you painted the other doors in the hallway to match.

The closet door--maybe. Or you could try to minimize the impact of the dark gray by hanging something white over them (a shoe organizer, etc.) You probably could even get all crazy and do a slipcover for the door. :)

  4. Good point, Anne. Maybe I just paint the inside part of the door white and leave the outside gray? Is that weirder than just leaving it all gray?

  5. I am super jealous of your floors. I like the doors dark. It makes the white trim really pop.

  6. I would paint the inside of the door the chocolate brown of the chair you want- and do the closet door to match, but leave the outside of the door the same color as all the others in the hallway. If you go with brown it should only take one coat (if you use the good paint). Make sure the stuff that is on there isn't oil, and if it is ask your local Sherwin Williams guy what to use to cover it best. I know we had that issue at some point, but I totally don't remember what we used- just that it stuck well. Lastly, most doors are done in a satin so they are easy to clean, so you will probably need to sand it a little first. I wouldn't get carried away, you won't need to sand off the old paint, just rough up the surface a little so the new paint adheres better.

As for the sewing- curtains are pretty easy peasy. I have done 3-4 sets now (one fully lined) and never even used a pattern. They aren't perfect, but they block the sunlight, match my decor, and were WAY cheaper than buying pre-made ones. One tip I use is to iron down the hem lines (in addition to pinning, or instead of) so they stay super smooth while you sew. Mine are all just basic, rectangular curtains, but they serve their purpose and required minimal measuring/cutting/pinning. I think there are photos of the ones from my bedroom up on facebook from when we redecorated.

    Good luck!

  7. I actually like the Gray and you could always incorporate it with a few accents...a throw pillow, a stripe of fabric...also, I agree about the doors...don't paint them unless you paint the other doors in the hall and that will just be a pain.
