Ben: Version 2.0

We had a lot of health issues during Ben's first 18 months of life.  There was blood in his poop the first month, then the non-stop spitting up and the green poop and the eczema (food allergy related).  Then there was the time he swelled up when we gave him peanut butter and the fact that he pretty much dropped off the percentile charts after being at 50% for awhile.  Then a horrible face rash plagued him all winter last year.  Luckily, though, he's now healthy as can be!

I was really praying for a healthier baby this time around.  Unfortunately, it's quickly becoming clear that we are dealing with the same issues.  Only we can add crying-almost-every-minute-she's-awake-if-she's-not-being-worn to the list.  And being held isn't good enough.  She actually doesn't even really like being held.  She must be WORN.  She's been gassy and fussy for a few weeks now.  Then she started getting some mild baby acne a week ago.  That took a turn for the worse and in the past few days, has gotten horrible.  It's ALL over her face, her neck, her back, her chest, even in her ears and on her eyelids.  I'm not even sure this is baby acne now.  Her face feels like sandpaper.

Then enter today's newest symptom.  The green, mucus poop.  Sorry, but you are reading a mom blog.  The tell-tale milk intolerance poop.

I went off dairy and gluten and wheat and eggs starting on Monday.  I'm living on chips and salsa and coconut milk.  Yum.

It wouldn't be so bad if she weren't obviously in such pain.  At least with Ben, he seemed mostly content despite his issues.  It breaks my heart to see my baby hurting and not know what to do for her.

The silver lining is that we went through it all with Ben and came out on the other side with a healthy, happy (well, when he's not being two years old) toddler.  We'll survive this, too.  We could just use a few prayers that she gets some relief from the pain soon.

My poor, poor baby girl:

  1. Oh Chelsea, I am so sorry! Thank goodness you've gone through this before, but also, you've had to go through this already! I hope that changing your diet helps. Sending positive thoughts your way! Poor baby, and poor mama :(

  2. It's so hard to see our little ones like this. My son had horrible acne (worse than this). We saw the doctor multiple times and there was nothing to do but wait it out. It did go away. But you know the acne is bad when the doctor says he's never seen baby acne so bad and asks you to stay in the office for a few more minutes so he can show the nurse practitioner in training the acne. She will come out on the other side of this happy and healthy.

  4. I'm really sorry you're going through this sucktitude again. I hope you and Adalyn find improvement sooner rather than later. At least this time you know where the light at the end of the tunnel is.

  5. Oh I am so sorry, my baby boy had acne too. Something that I was told to cut out while nursing was acidic foods such as tomatoes, oranges strawberries and anything spicy. My son also had a milk allergy.

  6. So sorry you're dealing with this! I hope it passes soon :( Another common allergen you might consider is corn. You could try cutting that out if you don't notice a difference after cutting out the gluten, eggs & dairy. I think it's also great that you're back to making all your food! That is definitely key since you never know what's in the store-bought processed stuff.

  7. I'm sorry you're dealing with this as well, hope it passes quickly. Was just wondering if your breast milk is causing this to her why won't you try formula? Not saying one is better or anything, but why are you making her suffer like this?

  8. Thank you for all the support, ladies! Your kind words mean so much to me.

Anon - I'm not making her suffer. I'm doing what's best for her. Children who are susceptible to allergies need breastmilk even more than the average baby. It's the best way to ensure she has the mildest allergies possible. Giving her formula would be easiest for me, no doubt, and would offer her immediate relief, but in the long run, could potentially cause her more suffering.

  9. Totally disagree with the formula statement. Formula is toxic! Do you know how many babies get sick off that stuff and suffer life-long health issues? Not only is it unhealthy, it most definitely wouldn't solve any allergy issues. If anything, it would worsen them because of all the processed crap it contains. Chelsea is totally doing the right thing by breastfeeding! Just gotta work out the kinks to get her better ;) Great job mama
