First things first, as long as we can get some needed tools, Tim will be building us this bed, courtesy of Ana White:
The bottom will be white, but I'm wanting to do a fabric headboard. I am SO IN LOVE with this fabric I found on fabric.com:
Because I'm no good at matching prints, I have no idea if our current duvet will look good with this fabric. Here's our current duvet. Thoughts?
I'm thinking no, but sometimes I just don't have an eye for stuff like that. I'm SO in love with this fabric that I'm debating getting a white duvet cover just to make this fabric headboard work. Plus I love, love, love the hotel all-white thing. So something like this:
For the wall color, I know that I definitely want to go with either this grey (quicksilver by Sherwin Williams):
Or this one (north star by Sherwin Williams):
So that's option one. We're basically working with this scheme, which I love because it's soft and romantic and light:
Or we have option two. Turquoise-ish/light blue! It's probably my all-time favorite color and I think this next scheme would make the room really bright and fun, but I can't decide if I can let go of the "romantic" thing I'm after if it means getting my turquoise. Here's the color I'm really drooling over:
(I have searched high and low and cannot for the life of me find the blog that I found this dresser on! I am so sorry I can't give the credit where it's due - isn't it gorgeous?!)
In this case I'd keep our current bed set, slap up a white (or maybe turquoise if I'm feeling brave) headboard, stick with the same color walls and curtains as in the above scenario but paint the dresser the blue color and sew up some turquoise throw pillows for the bed.

So we have this color scheme:
So do I go with soft & romantic or less romantic but bolder and more fun?
is that dresser a filing cabinet? and go with whatever you think you will want to look at the longest.
ReplyDeletealso- don't be afraid to mix in darker colors. it adds to the cozy/romantic feeling. your second blue option would love amazing with some chocolate brown and splashes of light orange to keep it fresh.
the grays are lovely, but seem a little cold for a bedroom. of course, you can always install chair rail molding and paint above it one color and below it another (or paint a stripe). then you can have a couple of your favorites.
i love the fabric you picked out as well, but not a giant fan of it going with the bedspread you already have.
and white is great, but just think of how many times you will need to have it cleaned. two kids. markers. food. dirty shoes. sticky fingers. oh my.
i love the fabric you picked out! all white is beautiful, but it would be a lot of cleaning like your friend said.
ReplyDeletehave you thought about making a duvet cover out of that fabric instead? and then have accent pillows in light blue, gray, and maybe that pink/peach color from the flower on the fabric? with that you could do an all white headboard and footboard. that way if you ever changed duvet covers in the future, you wouldn't have to worry about it matching the headboard?
and to throw in your favorite turquoise color, you could do it as an accent wall behind your bed? i think the blue colors would still work well together.
i would also say the current bedspread wouldn't match the fabric you have picked out
I agree with the first two posters--I think you would regret an all-white bedspread.
ReplyDeleteI like the fabric, but I think its motif is too close to your current bedspread. It would look too busy and mismatched. So I think you could either make the fabric headboard with the print and choose a charcoal or black cover for your bed, OR keep your current bedding, recover the headboard in a bluish gray solid, and make an accent pillow out of the fabric you love.
I like both color combinations you are considering, but if it were my bedroom, I would opt for the first, more neutral palette. The other palette would be sweet for a guest bedroom sometime. I agree with the previous poster about adding a splash of orange.
I also agree with white being hard to keep up with. The bottom of the bed is going to get dirty from shoes, feet, kids and so will the white furniture. It will show everything! It may take work to keep a white bedspread that white. Lots of bleach! Overtime white tends to yellow and will be hard to keep stains (again, 2 kids) off.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric for the top choice won't match the current duvet. Maybe a light blue duvet or dark grey duvet would look nice with it.
We have sherwin williams quicksilver in our little boy's room and it's definitely blue-grey. That's what we were going for, but just in case you didn't know. It definitely reads blue up on the walls. I was afraid it would be too light (we also looked at north star) but it's perfect - you get the color without the darkness.
ReplyDeleteI think the duvet that you have would match REALLY nice. It looks to be in the same pattern as the fabric you have picked.
ReplyDeleteTotally realized I am going again the majority here, but personally I think it would match.
I get the "2 kids + white comforter = bad idea" thing, but I also think that mom and dad's room should be for mom and dad. If your house is anything like mine, I'm sure it's baby-proofed with toys scattered everywhere; why can't your master bedroom serve as a grown-up space for you and Tim? These things are always easier said than done, so perhaps a cheap white comforter (TJMaxx style)? I love the blue and gray color scheme.
ReplyDeleteHey Chelsea,
ReplyDeleteI came to your blog via Jessica Cooper's. You are a great writer. I love getting insight into other families and it seems we have some things in common, namely cloth diapers and an attempt at healthy eating! I hope your little one is doing better. It looks like you have a Moby wrap? I used the wrap some with Jack, but then it got HOT here in New Orleans and he got HUGE. I will give it another try next go round. Anyway, just wanted to say that I was here and reading over your blog!
Courtney (Owen) Landry
Aw, thank you so much guys! I feel like I have a whole slew of interior designers at my disposal. :)
ReplyDeleteYou guys are right about the white, although I'm with Jessica in that the master bedroom is mommy & daddy's place. Well, except for when we have a newborn. But Ben doesn't get to come in our room often and I think I'd like to keep it that way.
I think I'm leaning toward a grey or black duvet cover so I can get my fabric headboard that I'm in love, love, love with! And I'll go with option one, obviously. Anyway, thanks again!
And Courtney, it's good to "see" you again!
I'm a bold color person myself, but I don't see any reason you can't have a turquoise dresser with your favored fabric (I think I see the background is turquoise, right?)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the pp about making a duvet cover instead of the white bedding. What if you change your mind in a few years? You don't want to be stuck with a bed that's hard to decorate around.
Can't wait to see the finished product!
Girl, you're inspiring me! I like the first scheme. That fabric is GORGEOUS! I believe the bedroom should be a haven for a couple, so choose what will make you feel most relaxed.
