Keeping it really real: snazzing up the master bedroom.

Our master bedroom could probably win an award for least glamorous master bedroom to have ever existed.  It's currently worse than normal because we have a newborn rooming in and along with her came an ugly changing table.  But even on a good day, our master bedroom is my least favorite room to be in.  It's just...blah.  In the world of priorities, this comes last.  Obviously.

I'm a little embarrassed to be putting this out there, but I'm just transparent enough to do it.  Plus I need help.  I'm not good at the design-y stuff and I need to do this very cheaply.  We don't have a line item in the budget for decorating which is the biggest reason our room looks like this to begin with.  I'm dedicating the next few months to redoing this room, though, and I need to get it done as cheaply as humanly possible.  So like Adalyn's nursery, most everything will need to be a DIY project.  And I'm very, very, very open to ideas here.  When we do have our room back to ourselves, I want it to be cozy and snuggly and romantic.  I want it to be a place I enjoy being.

Okay, enough suspense, let's just get to the pictures, shall we?  These are horrible pictures because we have bad lighting in this room, especially in light of the fact that one window is covered with...a bed sheet.  Yeah, that's embarrassing.  Like I said, this room is our last priority.

Welcome to our (tiny) master bedroom:

Photobucket

Take note of the ugly changing table, the basket full of cloth diapers, the super old & ugly fan, the space heater and a whole bunch of cords all crammed in one little corner of our tiny room.  Glamorous, no?

Photobucket

To our right, you'll find the bed sheet curtain (long story short is that when we switched rooms, we somehow lost the extra curtain rod for our other curtain and we haven't gotten around to buying a new one yet), our cheap Target dresser that has not fared well (in other words, the bottom of the dresser drawers are literally falling out), a whole bunch of junk on our dresser and a mismatched bed set (in my defense, it normally isn't so bad but our matching duvet is in the dryer):

Photobucket

Like I said, it's normally not this bad.  Picture a black duvet with matching flowers.  Actually, I'll do you one better.  Here it is.

Photobucket

Oh, and we don't have bedside tables.  We did, but our room is too small to fit them in, so we have this antique table from Tim's grandmother on my side:

Photobucket

And, ahem, a Rubbermaid container on poor Tim's side.  If you could see me right now, I'm blushing.  And yes, we clearly have a baby with a cold on our hands.

Photobucket

Oh, and then here's my current "sewing area."  This is exactly why I'm not sewing right now.

Photobucket

And maybe you can get a good feel of how small our space is with this picture.  And funny sidenote: I was looking forward to not being pregnant anymore so that I didn't have to lug around a baby with me every second of every day.  But as this picture proves, turns out I'm still lugging around a baby with me every second of every day.  This is the only way I can get anything done with this fusspot.

Photobucket

So there you have it.  Isn't it lovely (cue Stevie Wonder)?  I have tons of ideas brewing in my head that I'll share with each reno stage.  Because this project will have many reno stages over many months.

  1. I'll keep my eyes open for you, at garage sales and craigslist for some nice but cheap/free furniture! And I don't think your room is that bad! Made me feel like mine is somewhat normal :)

  2. I feel your pain! Our bedroom was mismatched and not even painted for years. But we saved a little, pinched some pennies, yardsaled and DIYed and now we LOVE our master bedroom. LOVE! I posted all the photos on facebook last year. I think the biggest expense in our room was the fabric for the curtains. I sewed them all myself, but we have a large window that needed sheers and darker curtains, plus the sink area that needed to be blocked off. It was a ton of yardage. To save though, we stained dowels instead of buying curtain rods. We also scraped the popcorn off the ceiling, installed crown molding and chair rail molding, painted, and removed a closet. In your room I think some paint will go a LONG way towards making it cozier. I think your big splurge will need to be a nice sized dresser you can both share that isn't falling apart. Yardsales and goodwills are both great places to start, and also try craigslist. Look for pieces that are solid wood, not particle board, and don't have much in the way of large chips or dents. Little scratches can be sanded out and color/hardware can be changed. We painted our cabinets and they look brand new- friends thought we actually replaced them. Paint can do amazing things. I can let you know when the sales are coming up at Sherwin Williams.

  4. Here are a couple of tidbits that may be helpful
*paint - check the reject section at Lowes and Home Depot
*vinyl wall clings - a super inexpensive statement piece or simple added wall decor. Shop Target clearance or Michaels with a 50% sale or coupon
*curtains - hit the JCP outlet on 75th St
We have found some great buys there as well as Tuesday Morning
*furniture - repurpose pieces that can be purchased at a garage sale, Good Will or Salvation Army. My favorite recent repurpose I saw took a dresser (not a chest of drawers) and cut out one side for a desk area. SEWING area solved!!
*decor - Tuesday morning is one of my favorites to shop for decor as well as Marshall's Home Goods
I also love the look of open closets/shelving in small spaces IF you can keep the look clean.
I know the feeling of wanting to tackle a space all too well. You want to snap your fingers and have it all glam', but have to play in the financial aspect of waiting it out and shopping for the best deals. Be patient and it will turn out perfect!

  5. I too am plagued with small home syndrome but some how I make it work. Pats self on back. Think 2 br duplex apartment and 4 kids. Also a teeny tiny budget. My style is more eclectic than yours and probably a little vintagey. I love Christine's furniture repurpose idea
But here are a few tips I have: 1) underbed storage boxes 2) vinyl wall clings 3) large picnic baskets stacked make great storage and side tables. (lots of people give these away to thrift stores. The most I paid for one is $10) 3) drop leaf tables. Like that antique one would be great for a sewing area. I had one with a basket of my projects underneath and my machine on top. just put the leaf up when you want to sew. 4) Ikea also has a drop leaf table that attaches to the wall. 5) shelving is awesome. 6) curtains can be super cheap if you can sew them yourself.
My main key to design in my house is making the everyday stuff look like it is a part of the design but if too ugly to display then it must be hidden away.

  6. I know I've told you this before, but I love, love, love your floors.

I wish I had some awesome design tips, but my house is sort of a mismash of whatever too. All I will say is that you definitely need a sewing desk now that you have a little girl. Little dresses are a great way to learn to sew! :-)

  8. The current issue of DIY magazine has some great tips on decorating on a shoestring and some great ideas! I'm going to do a bunch of them myself. It's amazing what a little paint and creativity can do! Our bedroom looks a lot like that, only shamefully more messy. I'm on a mission to get it looking magazine-cover worthy by the end of summer! LOL

  9. Have you thought about turning the bed, so it's in front of the north window? it might work if you had a headboard, that it would free up more space on the side walls? or have you thought about making an opening on the current bed wall, to your bathroom? so it would be a private bathroom? I have an idea about gaining extra space in the hall area right outside it, that would allow you a little more room in your master bedroom. you know i'm all about room re-designs :) i totally feel your pain about wanting it done right away- i feel the very same about my m.bedrm. I'll have you tell you about the bargain light fixtures! and you know i love craigslist always has great deals, and fixer uppers for a cost effective budget.

  10. Thank you SO much everyone! Great tips - I knew I could count on you guys! I love the budget ideas - reject paint, vinyl clings, repurposing! I had such a fun time making over that old dresser for Adalyn's room that I'm really excited to do one for our room. And I'm most excited about building our bed! Supposedly it's a $50 - $75 project and any bed I've found that like goes for at least $600 retail for a king. Yipee!

Megan - I was hoping you'd chime in here. We need to discuss this in person soon, miss interior designer! :)
